Carolyn Ann (Hoover) Rubin, of Grand Rapids, died July 13, 2021, at Grand Village Assisted Living & Memory Care in Grandville surrounded by her family and the caring Grand Village staff. She was 82.
Carolyn was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 19, 1938.
During her teenage years, Carolyn lived on a tiny island off of Grosse Ile, where her parents ran a boat livery, and she enjoyed the small, close-knit Island community. Ever after, she loved being near water.
She graduated from Grosse Ile High School and earned her bachelor's degree in early elementary education at Eastern Michigan University in 1960.
Carolyn married Howard Rubin on December 30, 1961 at St. James Episcopal Church in Grosse Ile, Michigan and they enjoyed nearly 60 years of marriage together.
Carolyn and Howard lived in Detroit for several months before moving to Knoxville, Tenn., Cincinnati, Ohio and finally Kentwood in 1976, where she lived for the rest of her life.
Carolyn loved being a Mom and Gramma. She loved children (sometimes even in preference to adults) and her years teaching elementary school in California and Ohio.
Besides children, Carolyn especially liked waterfalls, fireworks, coffee with girlfriends, bargain-hunting, travelling, visiting zoos, baking, and serving others.
Carolyn was a longtime member of Saint Mark Lutheran Church, and her Christian faith sustained her throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by her brother Roy, Jr., her parents Roy and Vina Hoover and her brothers-in-law Joseph Colombatto and Jim Wilson. She is survived by her sisters Doris "Mickey" Colombatto and Joan Wilson.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Howard; four children: Jeff (Stephanie) of Madison, Conn., Scott (Lynette) of Yorba Linda, Calif., Karen (Chris) of Petoskey, Mich., and Ann (Sandra) of Minneapolis; grandchildren Tanner, Dawson, Brock, Emily, Isabel, Dana, Logan, Betsy, and many cherished friends, including forever friends Jane and Doug Maxim.
Special thanks to all who walked with Mom, and our whole family, throughout our journey with Alzheimer’s disease. Mom was comforted by your presence, and we are so grateful for your love and care. We especially thank Avis Brooks for her knowledge, care and kindness.
The family will greet visitors on Friday, July 16, from 5 to 8 pm at Stroo Funeral Home, 1095 68th Street, SE. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 17, at the Stroo Funeral Home.
