Reverend Richard M. Helderop, age 82 of Kentwood, stepped into Heaven on Saturday, October 9, 2021 after having valiantly battled cancer and Parkinson’s disease for many years. Richard is survived by his wife, Sandra, of 62 years, 6 children, Richard (Sue), Beth (Norman), Debra (Bill), Douglas, Denise (Jim) and Scott (Becky). He is also survived by his sister Beverly Johnston, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, 18 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and hundreds of adopted persons who looked up to him as a father figure.

Dick, as he was nicknamed, loved a good joke and once he had mastered it, told it the rest of his life. His quick wit paled in comparison to his love for his faith and his passion for the Word of God. During his ministry career that spanned over 50 years, he pastored two churches: Urbandale Baptist Church of Battle Creek, MI and Dorr Baptist Church of Dorr, MI. He loved sharing the Gospel of Christ with everyone, including his hospice nurse during his final days. Pastor Helderop was also a first responder. No matter who called, at any time of the day or night, he was ready to go and minister. He related to everyone whether it be sports, driving a Sunday school bus or repairing the church’s boiler. He loved every person he encountered and above all, pointed them to Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and His forgiveness of sins.

Memorial gifts can be made in lieu of flowers to the Heritage Baptist Church mission program at www.hbckentwood.org and Faith Hospice at www.faithhospice.org/foundation. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 12th, from 5-8 pm at Heritage Baptist Church. The Celebration of Life service will be held at Heritage Baptist Church, Wednesday October 13, at 11 am. The church is located at 1570 60th St SE, Kentwood, MI 49508. The Celebration of Life service will also be live streamed Here on Heritage Baptist Church’s YouTube Channel, HBC Kentwood
