Rodney "Rod" Toering, age 77, of Grand Rapids, passed into eternal life on Sunday, October 12, 2014.  Rod was a Vietnam veteran.  He was owner of R. Toering Construction for many years and served as a dedicated cadet counselor at Burton Heights and Alger Park Christian Reformed Churches for almost 50 years.  He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Wilma; his daughters, Etta Rene Toering, Linda (Dwayne) Crumback; his four grandchildren, Jeremy and Carrie, Nicole, Jessica, and Brandon; great-grandchildren, Allie, Brooklyn, Ziva, and Owen; brothers and sisters, Henry (Joyce) Toering, Arnold (Doris) Toering; Karleen Smits, Alma (Charles) Warren, Norma (John) Van Wyk, Marilyn (Duane) Trumpie, Nancy Toering, Steve (Corey) Toering, Myron (Marla) Toering, Sharon Dykhuizen, Marvin (Linda) Toering, Craig Toering; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Tom (Nancy) Dykhuis, Andrew (Elaine) Tiesenga, Donald (Eleanor)Tiesenga; many nieces and nephews.  Rod was preceded in death by his brother, David; brothers-in-law, John Smits, Harold Van Ravensway; and sister-in-law, Julia Dykhuis.  The funeral service will be held 11 am Thursday, October 16 at Alger Park Christian Reformed Church, 2655 Eastern Ave. SE, with Rev. David Deters officiating. Interment in Blain Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Calvinist Cadet Corps.  The family will greet visitors on Wednesday from 6-9 pm at the funeral home, and Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Rod was one of my counselors when I was in Cadets at Burton Heights CRC (Art Bok was by Grandpa). I have fond memories of camping and the sweet scent of pipe tobacco. I'm sorry I didn't know of Rod's passing until today, the day of his funeral. May the peace of Christ be with you in this time of sadness.
