George Wayne Clark, friend to many, died July 3, 2021 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was 82
years old.
George was born September 21, 1938 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Mildred and Glenn Clark. He was a
life-long resident of the state of Michigan, in which he was very proud.
George dearly loved his grandchildren and his weathered hands were evidence of a life filled
with hard work and patient caregiving. George was a proud Navy man, joining shortly after his
graduation from Caledonia High School in 1956. Never one to lack a smile, he was generous in
his laughter and gregarious in his tale telling. He had many fond memories of his mischievous
days on the family farm, serving in the South Pacific, fishing, golfing, and selling tires. In his
later years George proudly became a volunteer for the Kent County Sherriff’s Department. He
spent nearly 20 years of service there and claimed a myriad of friends who became like family.
George attended St. Mark’s Lutheran Church for many years and was quick to remind his family
that Jesus was his Lord and Savior when he entered hospice. After his diagnosis he was anxious
to be headed to heaven quickly to be reunited with his wife, Karen and many friends and
He and Karen spent many winter days in the Key West area. Both his and Karen’s ashes will be
placed under their favorite reading tree at Annie’s Park in Marathon, Florida.
George never felt the need to complain and he was not one to judge; he was the life of the
party, and he will be remembered by his tendency to exaggerate a story. He clearly wanted to
be loved by all. He was fiercely proud of his grandchildren and even though his caregiving days
limited his ability to travel, he wanted them to feel welcome in his presence.
George was a loyal employee and even up to his last weeks he could be heard selling tires to his
friends. He will be missed by many in the heavy equipment and tire businesses.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Karen (Slentz) Clark, his parents, Mildred and Glenn
Clark, and his brothers, Forrest Clark and Glenn Clark, Jr.. He is survived by one brother, Richard Clark, his children,
Jeffrey (Dawn) Clark, Kristine (David) Wong, Rodger (former wife, Kathy) Shoemaker, Kristen Shoemaker (companion, Curt Belmer); nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and first wife, Jerie Hadley.
His family wishes to thank Faith Hospice for their compassionate service to George and his
family, the staff and nurses at Rivertown Ridge Assisted Living Center, and his many special
friends at Grief Share of Cornerstone Church.
Friends are invited to celebrate George’s life with a reception/visitation in the community room
at Stroo Funeral Home, 1095 68th Street SE, Grand Rapids, on Thursday, July 8 from 11 am – 1 pm. There will be a
short memorial service following the visitation. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the National MS Society Upper Midwest Chapter.
