Carolyn Ann (Hoover) Rubin, of Grand Rapids, died July 13, 2021, at Grand Village Assisted Living & Memory Care in Grandville surrounded by her family and the caring Grand Village staff. She was 82.

Carolyn was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 19, 1938.

During her teenage years, Carolyn lived on a tiny island off of Grosse Ile, where her parents ran a boat livery, and she enjoyed the small, close-knit Island community. Ever after, she loved being near water.

She graduated from Grosse Ile High School and earned her bachelor's degree in early elementary education at Eastern Michigan University in 1960.

Carolyn married Howard Rubin on December 30, 1961 at St. James Episcopal Church in Grosse Ile, Michigan and they enjoyed nearly 60 years of marriage together.

Carolyn and Howard lived in Detroit for several months before moving to Knoxville, Tenn., Cincinnati, Ohio and finally Kentwood in 1976, where she lived for the rest of her life.

Carolyn loved being a Mom and Gramma. She loved children (sometimes even in preference to adults) and her years teaching elementary school in California and Ohio.

Besides children, Carolyn especially liked waterfalls, fireworks, coffee with girlfriends, bargain-hunting, travelling, visiting zoos, baking, and serving others.

Carolyn was a longtime member of Saint Mark Lutheran Church, and her Christian faith sustained her throughout her life.

She was preceded in death by her brother Roy, Jr., her parents Roy and Vina Hoover and her brothers-in-law Joseph Colombatto and Jim Wilson. She is survived by her sisters Doris "Mickey" Colombatto and Joan Wilson.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Howard; four children: Jeff (Stephanie) of Madison, Conn., Scott (Lynette) of Yorba Linda, Calif., Karen (Chris) of Petoskey, Mich., and Ann (Sandra) of Minneapolis; grandchildren Tanner, Dawson, Brock, Emily, Isabel, Dana, Logan, Betsy, and many cherished friends, including forever friends Jane and Doug Maxim.

Special thanks to all who walked with Mom, and our whole family, throughout our journey with Alzheimer’s disease. Mom was comforted by your presence, and we are so grateful for your love and care. We especially thank Avis Brooks for her knowledge, care and kindness.

The family will greet visitors on Friday, July 16, from 5 to 8 pm at Stroo Funeral Home, 1095 68th Street, SE. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 17, at the Stroo Funeral Home.

Mrs Rubin(Carolyn) was an amazing and loving woman. One of my greatest memories was from my days in high school swimming. She was always loving. And supportive of not only her amazing kids, but also the whole team in general. Thank you for your love and support. You will be greatly missed. You are with God and all if his angels.

I worked at Grand Village and was one of her caregivers on third shift. From the first time I met her I knew there was something special about her. She captured my heart instantly. Every night when I tucked her into bed I always made sure to tell her I loved her (and she quietly say it back) and sometimes would sit with her until she fell asleep because she loved that. She will be truly missed and will always be in my heart. Thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

Carolyn was a kind, loving member of our family and always had a smile or hug for you. There is no wonder why Howard chose such a special lady to be a part of his life. At our family get togethers at Dad's, Norb's, and John's place you could always find Carolyn putting something together in the kitchen or making sure everyone was having a good time.
Carolyn was dealt a bitter hand when they announced she had Alzheimer's disease, but her family with tender care remained by her side holding her hand the whole time. Such a special sweet LADY...she held all of her love and memories in her heart I'm sure.
Hugs to your family and virtual hugs to you in heaven........w e will miss you a lot.

Although we will be out of town and unable to attend, the entire Rubin family, and especially our dear friend Howard, will be in our thoughts and prayers. Carolyn was a wonderful woman and a strong Christian friend. We always loved seeing her at St Mark with her mug of coffee. I’m pretty sure she inspired our current coffee bar and social time! Family was so important to her and she always asked about our kids and grandkids and loved sharing about hers too. She will be missed by our whole St Mark family.

It was a delight to meet Carolyn & Howard at
the Villa Model when I worked there as I showed
them various Villas & they quickly found the one
they wanted to buy. They called me back for a
second look one evening & Carolyn arrived with
a homemade cake much to my surprise!
Carolyn was always smiling & enjoying life to the
fullest. We shared some fun coffee hours &
lunches throughout the years. And I have been
forever grateful the night Howard & Carolyn
took me to the hospital emergency center.
‘A friend in need is a friend indeed.’ We will
all miss Carolyn. May she rest in peace.
