Laverne Dale Rietman, age 76, spread his wings and flew to the pearly gates of Heaven on the 23rd of October.  He was the rock of his family. Survived by his wife, Ruth Ann Rietman; son, Eric and wife Aimee; daughter, Sheri and husband Mark; 18 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; sisters, Mildred Branch, Doris (Darwin) Huff, Joyce (Ernest) Williamson; sisters-in-law, Wanda Rietman, Bonnie (Larry) Schwartzkopf; and many nieces and nephews. There are many things you can say about Vern. He was a soldier drafted to fight for his country in Vietnam at just 21 years old. Bravery. Loyalty. Obedience. He never skipped a beat in these aspects. He never skipped a beat, ever. He is and was a man of integrity; someone that never turned anyone away, no matter the circumstances. Vern had many accomplishments in life: His 41 year career, his 52 wonderful years of marriage, his children, his many grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren. It’s obvious to anyone that knew and loved him that he would do anything for the people he cared about, and would do the same for the common man, despite their relation. Laverne’s spirit will always be manifested through those who knew him in remembrance of his humor, his contagious laugh and the unconditional love that he showed for everyone each and every day. He means so much to so many because he made it a point to express his tender love and deep loyalty to those he cared for. His eyes, his smile, his ability to light up a room, it will forever be the hole that cannot be filled. The family will receive visitors on Thursday, Oct. 28, from 5 to 8 pm at the Stroo Funeral Home, 1095 68th Street, SE, Grand Rapids. Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm Friday, October 29, 2021, at Good News Baptist Church, 6830 Eastern Ave., SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49508. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Laverne may be made to the family to help with expenses. In love and in light, we hold your hand and lift you up. Rest In Peace and rest with God, sweet Vern. Your spirit will continue on through everyone that you touched, and you will always be remembered as the man that gave everything. Your loyalty to God will comfort those who need comfort. Your smile will remind everyone who needs reminding, that you always had a pure soul and a conscious heart. Your laugh will always be remembered as the contagious roar of a lion. Your life will forever be the epitome of what man should strive to be. Laverne, rest in love, Rest In Peace. We will all see you again one day.

We love you dearly.
