Mr. Raymond “Ray” Henry Hudson, son of the late Clyde Euclid and Martha Hudson, passed away on October 26, 2021, at his home in Kentwood, Michigan.  He was born on May 24, 1931, in Grand Rapids.

Ray met Mary Kathryn “Cassie” Bonett, of Cheboygan, at a wedding in 1953.  After their marriage in 1954, Ray and his wife welcomed three children, Jill (Tom) Sobczak, Jackie Hudson, and Raymond Todd Hudson.  Ray and Cassie were founding and active parishioners at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Kentwood, Michigan.

Ray worked for over five decades, primarily as an excavator.  After retirement, Ray continued to be an active member with the Operating Engineers Union 324 of Michigan.  You could always find Ray and Cassie participating in the Labor Day bridge walk or gathering at union picnics.

Ray loved to be outside.  If he wasn’t in the garage tinkering with a project, he was tending to his garden, or riding his bike along the many trails through the Grand Rapids region.  When the weather brought him inside, Ray enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, watching Notre Dame football, and helping measure and cut fabric for Cassie’s sewing projects. Ray never turned down a cup of coffee, potato salad, a meal with good company, or the opportunity to reminisce about historic Grand Rapids.  He loved to share memories of taking his beloved to Ramona Park on a date, catching a show at one of the many theaters, and how much his children loved the holiday window displays at Herpolsheimer’s.  Ray had a kind and generous heart, and he was never too busy to lend a helping hand.

Ray is survived by his wife, Cassie; his daughters Jill and Jackie; sisters Joan VanNoord and Margaret Jackson; grandchildren, Katie (Garett) Chau, Adam Sobczak, Sarah (Ryan) Beach; and his six great grandchildren, Oliver Chau, Thomas, Josiah, and Rosie Sobczak, and Henry and Annabelle Beach.

Ray is preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Clyde Hudson, Cloah Devine, Virginia Sommerdyke, Doris Soper and Theresa Dunham; son, Raymond Todd; son-in-law, Thomas Sobczak; grandson, Ryan Sobczak.  A funeral  mass will be held at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church on Friday, October 29, at 11 am with the family receiving visitors at 10:30 am. A private graveside ceremony will be held in Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Ray’s name to Feeding West Michigan and St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church.
