Alan “A.J.” Klynstra, age 49, of Caledonia, MI, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, November 6, 2021. A. J. loved his family, his church, his work, hockey, golfing, coaching, attending his kids’ games, spreadsheets, and dad jokes. Like his father, he had wit and a joy in dry humor, often accompanied by a quirky single raised eyebrow. A.J. grew up in Hudsonville and was a teen in the 1980s. He was often with friends catching air on his quarter pipe ramp and loved summers in Grand Haven wearing Swatch watches and Vans while doing tricks with friends on the pier.
A.J. graduated from Hudsonville High School. He attended Lansing Community College and graduated from Grand Valley State University with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering. He worked at American Bumper in Ionia and then as lab manager at Ventra in Grand Rapids. His most recent occupation was PLM Configuration Manager at Amway in Ada. Shannon and A.J. married in 1995 and went on to have four children, who became the center of their lives. A.J. loved sports and took joy in coaching, encouraging, and playing with his kids—travel hockey, soccer, biking, and watching Joseph in the MSU marching band are just some of his many favorite family activities. A bit of a roller coaster fanatic—A.J. traveled often to amusement parks with his family. Church life was close to A.J.’s heart; he was a deacon at Seventh Reformed in Grand Rapids and at Harvest Orthodox Presbyterian in Wyoming. He was a devoted husband, loving father and a faithful servant to his Lord and Savior. He came into this world late at night on Thanksgiving in 1971. He left it just 19 days short of his 50th birthday, which would have fallen on Thanksgiving again this year. A.J. was a grateful soul and loved his family and his life with passion and grace. He would wish us all to be thankful for our many blessings, just as he was for his. A.J. is preceded in death by his father, Col. James A. Klynstra; nephew Miles VanDalson. A.J. is lovingly remembered by his wife of 26 years, Shannon; children, Joseph, Megan, Matthew, Levi, his mother, Joyce Klynstra; his sister, Laura Klynstra (Gregorio Tzic); his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Vicki McMurray; his sisters-in-law, Bonny (Mark) Schmidt, Robin (Jason) VanDalson; brother-in-law, Tyler Miller; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. The family will greet relatives and friends at Stroo Funeral Home on Thursday, November 11 from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM. The service will be held at Harvest Orthodox Presbyterian Church on Friday, November 12, at 11AM, with Rev Dale VanDyke and Rev Doug Barnes, officiating. Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery.
