Ernest Scheltema, Jr., age 88  of Cutlerville, MI, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, November 27, 2021.

"How the good Lord has taken care of me all these years" was a phrase often heard by him.  Ernie was a craftsman carpenter for 60+ years, a skill he passed on to his 3 sons and grandson, Joe. He was a huge sports fan - especially loyal to the Tigers and South Christian Sailors.  He thoroughly enjoyed and took great pride in his beautifully manicured garden.  He was a passionate American who proudly served his country in the U.S. Army.  Ernie and Millie have been active in Covenant CRC since its inception in the early 1960s.  Ernie had served as elder, deacon, catechism teacher, and coached men's fast pitch softball for years.  Ernie adored his wife and loved his family.  He was married to his beloved bride "Millie Beth" 64 years. He was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Scheltema; and sisters, Alice Boggs, Ann Heinzelman, Trudy Kooistra, Laurie Hamstra; and by son, Scott Ernest Scheltema; and his son-in-law, Wayne DeWitt.  He will be dearly missed by his wife and children; Mildred (Jongert), Richard "Rick" (Cindy) Scheltema, James "Jim" (Kate) Scheltema, Shari (James) Elzinga, Sallie DeWitt, and Elizabeth (Jerry) Betten; grandchildren, Joe, Paul and Sam Scheltema, Lindsey, Matt (Bonnie), and Brianna Scheltema, Elizabeth (Austin) Berens, Jasmin Elzinga, Ben DeWitt, Katelyn Lettinga, Austin DeWitt, Carli and Jake Betten; his great-grandchildren, Hadlie and Everlie Lettinga; his brother, David (Marcia) Scheltema; his sister-in-law, Bea (Bill) Boorsma; as well as many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 15, from 4 - 6:30 PM, at the church and 10:00 - 11:00 AM, Thursday, December 16, prior to the service.  The Celebration of Life for Ernie will take place at 11:00 AM, Thursday, December 16, 2021, at Covenant Christian Reformed Church, 7171 Willard Ave SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49548, with Pastor Allen Petroelje officiating.

No words could ever describe what a loving husband, father and brother and friend. I looked up to him not only as a fellow friend in Christ but as this human man that took his role seriously as, loving everyone. Even though most my memories of Ernie were about “ Have you seen Millie?!” Most Sundays after a few chats snd a huge loving pat on the back.. he’d make his way to the car. He would pop his head in the door and kindly ask, “ Is it time to go yet Millie?” Annnnnd we would still chat on another 5 min.. he was so patient. He will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
