Service: To be held at a later date

Cemetery: Ft. Custer National Cemetery
Memorials: Kitchen Restoration project at Grace United Reformed Church, 9255 84th St. SE, Alto, MI 49302

Margaret Hawkins, 86, of Alto, MI, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, December 21, 2021, with her devoted husband of 43 years at her side. Margaret was born in Chicago, IL on August 25, 1938. At the age of 12 she moved with her mother and sister to Grand Rapids, MI where she graduated from Union High School and went on to the University of Michigan. She left UM after one year to marry a military man and for 20 years raised six children as the family traveled the United States and the world over. When the marriage ended, Margaret returned to Grand Rapids and worked in banking. She married her current husband, Lawrence, in 1978, and they lived in Virginia until he completed his military career in 1981. They lived for a time in Illinois before settling in Alliance, OH. Margaret was active in her church and, with her husband, spent three years as a missionary in Puerto Rico at the School for the Deaf. In 1988, Margaret and her husband sold everything and used their motor home to become full-time mobile missionaries for Servants on Wheels Ever Ready (SOWER). For 23 years they travelled from work project to work project across the United States and Canada until they retired in 2019 and settled back in Grand Rapids. Margaret was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved to sew and cook, and she used these talents to serve the Lord. She was a voracious reader of books and was seldom without one nearby. Margaret is survived by her husband, Lawrence; her sons, Richard, David, Steven, Daniel, and Randy Collins; her daughter, Margaret Sansale; step-children, Tracy Lanie, Christopher Hawkins, and Molly Ciaccio; sixteen grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Interment will be in Ft. Custer National Cemetery and a memorial service will be held at a later date.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Kitchen Restoration project at Grace United Reformed Church, Alto, MI.
