After a short, brave battle with cancer, Robert Allan Dodde, 73, of Grand Rapids, MI, passed away in peace surrounded by his loving wife of 52 years and adoring children on Tuesday, December 28, 2021.

Bob was born to Egbert and Theressa Thomasma Dodde on April 20, 1948 in Detroit, MI. He graduated from Forest Hills High School in 1966, and then served his country in the United States Army, where he learned to drive a semi-truck. He married Barbara Ann Currie on June 28, 1969 and began a beautiful family.

If you lived in Michigan between the mid-1970s through the late 2000s, you likely received groceries delivered by Bob in his green Spartan Stores truck. After more than a million safe miles on the road, Bob retired in 2009 and devoted his time to the service of others in his family and in his community.

Bob was involved in a number of faith-based organizations including Knights of Columbus, Marriage Encounter, Engaged Encounter, and his parish, St. Mary Magdalen in Kentwood, MI. There he was very active in prison ministry, Stephen’s Ministry, Eucharistic ministry, the Men’s Group, the Men of Emmaus, and regularly visited with the homebound. During the quiet of the morning, Bob could be found sitting in his three season room in devotion to his Lord. No one prayed the Rosary quite like Bob.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of Grand Rapids, MI, and their five children: Jennifer Dodde of Vinton, VA, Robert (Erica) Dodde of Portage, MI, Donielle (Peter) Xu of Caledonia, MI, Meridith (Christian) Borg of Byron Center, MI, and LeeAnn Dodde of Prescott, AZ. Bob had 10 grandchildren who were the apple of his eye: Emma and Allison Conner of Vinton, VA, Caden and Lawson Dodde of Portage, MI, Sophia, Heidi, and Charlotte Xu of Caledonia, MI, and Mallory, Trent, and Karly Sanderson of Byron Center, MI.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his mother and father-in-law Donald and IdaBelle Vollmer Currie, his brothers Ryan Dodde, Randall Dodde, and Rex Dodde, sisters-in-law Elaine Dodde, Debra Dodde, and Karen Currie, and brothers-in-law David Tait and Carl Bolks.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 AM Monday, January 3, 2022 at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church 1253 52nd St. SE, Kentwood, MI with Rev. Father Peter Vu officiating. Visitation will be held at Stroo Funeral Home from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM  with a Rosary directly following at 7:30 PM on Sunday, January 2, 2022. Visitation will also be held 1 hour prior to the service at church. Interment will take place in McNitt Cemetery in Conklin, MI. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, 1253 52nd St. SE, Kentwood, MI 49508 or Christian Appalachian Project (christianapp.org), or Help Pregnancy Aid (helppregnancy.org)

Dear Bob, We will not be able to sing the Lion King Song with Dave Miller like we did at one of our Parish Festivals in the mid 1990s. We will miss you very much. Barb and family, We are thinking of you and praying during these tough times for you. Thank God for our faith.

I want to thank Jennifer, beloved co-worker at SKYGEN USA, for sharing stories with me and the rest of the team about her Father, Robert (Bob) Dodde. Jennifer shared stories of Bob's faith and devotion to many things including his family, his Catholic Community, and his many missions here on earth. It is with a heavy heart that we lose such a strong devotee to helping others, but I am confident his legacy and good works will live on through his wife and children. Jennifer told me that the picture of Bob here on the memorial page says it all and I agree, I see his love and compassion for what is good with our humanity beaming from that handsome grin. Our sympathies to Barb and his children are strong. Rest in peace Robert Dodde, your purpose here has been fulfilled. Rob, Gene, Lisa, Jenn, Pam, Phil, Angie, Jackie, Crystal, Tom, and the rest of the SKYGEN team.

Dear Robert,
Our memories will be happy ones. We will bask in your afterglow of gap toothed smiles. We will hear the echo whispered softly in the trees of happy times and laughing times and bright summer days. Our tears will dry before the sun with the happy memories you left when your life was done. Go in Peace and Love my friend. Be with God. Love you so much. Mary
