Rev. John Jay Vander Stel, age 90, went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on February 1. Rev. John was one of ten children born to Bert and Mabel Vander Stel of Grand Rapids. He attended Grand Rapids Christian High and served in the U. S. Navy during the Korean War before marrying his wife, Mildred, in 1954. Rev. John graduated from Michigan State University and Grand Rapids School of Bible and Music and was ordained as a pastor in 1969. During his ministry, he pastored at Tippecanoe Community Church in Indiana, Curtis Baptist Church in the U.P., New Hope Chapel in Fremont and enjoyed filling in at various churches. Pastor John loved preaching, fishing, dogs, deviled eggs, pumpkin pie, spending time in their trailer at the Chapel in the Pines and eating out. Pastor John will be lovingly remembered by his four children, John Vander Stel Jr., Shirley (Charles) Wasoski, Dr. Lynda Mae (Kurt) and Phyllis (Scott) DeVos: grandchildren, Jennifer Kamps, Matthew (Danielle) Wasoski, Tyler and Baylee DeVos; great grandchildren, Shawn, Lucy, Cole and Quentin Kamps and Jaxton Wasoski; sisters, Marge (Fred) Corson, June Stutzman; brother, Maynard (Arva); sisters-in-law, Polly Vander Stel and Connie Vander Stel as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Vander Stel; granddaughter, Amanda Vander Stel; great grandson, Connor Kamps; sisters, Marion (Lee) Landis, Coral (Jim) Sluiter, and Dorothy Hulst; brothers, Robert, Louis and Norman Vander Stel; and brother-in-law, Rex Stutsman. The family will greet relatives and friends on Friday, February 11, from 10:00am - 12:00pm at Stroo Funeral Home, 1095 68th St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49508 and celebrate Pastor John's life at 12:00pm with a luncheon immediately following. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all of the Beacon Hill Nursing Staff who took such wonderful care of Pastor John and for being such a huge blessing to him, and them, during his time there. Memorial contributions may be made to the Beacon Hill Foundation, 1919 Boston St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49506.
