Alfred "Jack" Bloem, age 92, of Kentwood, went to be with his Lord on Monday, August 15, 2022. Jack graduated from Grand Rapids Christian High School, and from Calvin College in 1953 with a B.A. Degree in Education. He taught Junior High at Southwest Christian School for three years. He then obtained an M.A. and Ed.S. (Educational Specialist) Degree from the University of Michigan and began a 35 year career at Pine Rest Christian Hospital. He worked as a Special Education Teacher and later as the Principal and School Psychologist at the Children's' Retreat. He also served as Administrative Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services. He always felt so blessed by the special needs students he worked with over those years. After he retired from Pine Rest, he worked part-time in the Development Dept. for six years as the Church Relations Coordinator at Wedgwood Christian Services. Jack served as an elder at Covenant CRC and as a board member at South Christian High School. He enjoyed reading religious journals and books of European and American history, playing golf, collecting antique canes and walking sticks, and traveling with his wife, Dora. His car license plate reflected his trust in God's love and care, "QNA 1", which is the Heidelberg Catechism's first question and answer: "Our only comfort in life and in death is that I am not my own, but belong, body and soul, in life and in death, to my faithful Saviour, Jesus Christ". Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Dora, his sisters and brothers, Dorothy Baas, Harriet Baas, Hannah Casemier, Richard Bloem, and Robert Bloem. Surviving are his children, Russell (Jackie) Bloem, Kenneth (Stephanie) Bloem, Philip (Mary Ellen) Bloem, and Kathryn (Brad) DeBoer; his grandchildren, Michael (Sarah) Bloem, Matt (Kristi) Bloem, Jordan (Megan) Bloem, Rachel (Christian) Bloem Verwys, Timm Bloem, Paul (Katie) Bloem, Trudy Bloem, Marie Bloem, Jenni (Dave) Ribbens, and Stephanie DeBoer; and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at Covenant Christian Reformed Church, 7171 Willard Ave. SE at 11 am on Wednesday, August 17, with Rev. Doug Kamstra officiating. Interment in Winchester Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, we encourage you to consider a contribution to Wedgwood Christian Services. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 16, from 6 - 8 pm at Stroo Funeral Home and on Wednesday, August 17, prior to the service from 9:30 - 10:30 am at the church.
