Cornelius "Cornie" A. Leugs, age 87, of Grand Rapids, MI, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, September 6, 2022. Cornie's career was in teaching children; he served at several schools in the Kentwood Public Schools over 30 years, with his longest appointment at Valleywood Middle School, before retiring from Townline Elementary. Born in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, Cornie became a United States citizen on his 19th birthday and proudly served in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed a love of woodworking, stamp collecting, reading, and soil development – of which growing vegetables was a fortunate by-product. He was passionate about Christian faith and ministry throughout his life. He befriended others easily, and will be remembered by many for his genial disposition, open personality and genuine smile.

Cornie was preceded in death by his brothers, John Leugs and Andrew (Joan) Leugs; by his sister, Jan (Terry) Wiersma; and by former spouse, Dorie Leugs. He is lovingly remembered by his children, Michael (Ames) Leugs, Betsy (Brian) Carpenter, Tim (Amber) Leugs; by 9 grandchildren, Fisher (Afton) Leugs, Brian (Kathryn) Leugs, Ash Leugs, Sarah Carpenter, Ben Carpenter, Grace Carpenter, Tillie Leugs, Teddy Leugs and Bebe Leugs; by sister-in-law, Louise (John) Leugs, many nieces and nephews; and by first wife, mother of his children and lifelong friend, Esther (Dan) Bos.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM, Sunday, October 9, in the chapel of the Samaritas Terraces building (2000 32nd St. SE, Grand Rapids, 49508), with Rev. Steve DeVries officiating. Interment will be in Rosedale Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Samaritas Senior Living of Grand Rapids, to aid in their mission of providing a safe and comfortable home to Cornie's many friends.
