Andrew Jackson, age 86, of Byron Center, MI, passed away on Tuesday, November 8, 2022. Andrew was born in Chicago, IL on August 3, 1936, the fifth of eleven children born to Thomas Howard and Cora Jackson. Andrew grew up in White Cloud, MI, and graduated from White Cloud High School. He attended Albion College and Ferris State University, earning his Bachelor Degree, before continuing on to Michigan State University, where he earned his Master's and his Education Specialist Degrees. As a teacher, Andrew taught at Tri-County Public Schools in Howard City, MI, and Big Rapids Public Schools. He went on to serve as a school administrator at Kentwood Public Schools. During his time at Kentwood, Andrew attended Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary at Northwestern University, where he earned his Masters of Divinity. While still working as a school administrator, Andrew began serving part-time as a pastor in the United Methodist Church. Eventually, he began serving as a full-time pastor, faithfully serving St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Grand Rapids, MI, and Carlisle United Methodist Church in Byron Center, MI. In addition to being a dedicated educator and pastor, Andrew was also a talented singer, and often served as a soloist in the life of the church. A significant part of Andrew's ministry for both him and his family was their involvement in the Lake Louise Camp Community, where Andrew loved serving as a camp counselor for the senior high youth. Later in his ministry, Andrew served as a chaplain for the Michigan State Police, and also enjoyed filling the pulpit in several area churches.  Andrew will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Phyllis; children, Thomas Jackson, Diane Jackson - Symes and her husband, Shannon Symes; granddaughter, Alivia Neary; grandson, Jaxson Symes; and sister, Hannah Mae Jackson. The family will greet visitors on Friday, November 11, from 3 - 7 pm at Stroo Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 1 pm Saturday, November 12, at Grandville United Methodist Church, 3140 Wilson Ave. SW, with Pastor Ryan Wieland officiating.  There will be visitation prior to the service from 12 - 12:45 pm at the church. Interment will be in Winchester Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lake Louise Camp Community, Camp and Retreat Center in Boyne Falls. MI.

Phyllis and family,

I was sad to read of the death of Andy. We served on the Board of Ordained Ministry together and I grew to appreciate Andy’s careful wisdom and insight that he offered. Since moving to Grand Rapids, whenever I saw the Jackson’s, their genuine care, warmth and affirmation was always appreciated. My prayers are with you all in this time of grief.

I’m sorry to hear of Mr. Jackson’s passing. I hope Mrs. Jackson, as well as Tom and Diane, can find some peace during this difficulty time and comfort knowing he is in Heaven and they can see him again.

May God send His angels to comfort Andrew's family and bring them peace. I went to Albion College with Andy. A wonderful man!

Phyllis and family, my heartfelt condolences at this time. I so enjoyed when Andrew was a guest preacher at Wesley Park UMC in Wyoming, his messages were so powerful, and I loved how a little bit if singing accompanied his words. His voice was absolutely a gift from Heaven and if given the chance to stand in front of him at a service, I admit I did not sing as much as I took in his beautiful powerful voice. God Bless you all at this difficult time.

Phyllis and family, my prayers and thoughts are with you. Got to know Andy when he came to Fremont UMC to preach. Also, when Jenny and I stayed over night on our way to a UMW event. Such hospitality and friendliness.

We at the Rockford United Methodist Church remember him fondly, and want the family to know that we come along side them in sharing prayers and memories.

The 2 best friends are together again since
Ferris State. Both good men. We were lucky.
God be with them both. Much love to your family.

We, John and I, loved Andy. He was a very caring assistant principal when he was on the staff at EKHS.
It was a privilege to serve with him. His door was always open and it was so easy to confer with him.
However, what I admired most was his commitment to his Lord. Andy reflected Jesus and I was most grateful for his example. Praises that he is with the Lord!
