John T. Sterk, age 87, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, November 12, 2022, surrounded by his family in the comfort of his home. John was a member of First Byron Christian Reformed Church, where he served as a Deacon and Superintendent of Sunday School. He also served on the School Board for Byron Center Christian School, and was a member of the Byron Center Chess Club. Before his M.S. of 47 years, John graduated Calvin College, proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, and went on to own his own business, Preferred Decorating, a painting and wallpapering company. John was a loving and devoted husband to his wife, Barbara; father to Olivia Sterk (baby deceased), Laurie and Bob Brower, Mary and Jeff Applehof, Robert Sterk (deceased), and Janet Bing; grandfather to Trevor and Lauren, Nolan, Tara and Ryan, Austin (deceased), Taylor and John, Staci and Jim, Hunter, and Zachery; and the great grandfather of four children. John was the brother of Ida DeVries, Bill (deceased) and Marlene Sterk, Pete (deceased) and Vonnie Sterk, Ann and Dave Reiffer, Orville Sterk (deceased), Frank and Verlie Sterk, Sam and Diane Sterk, Henry Sterk, Shirley and Warren (deceased) Hofman, Leonard (Jan - deceased) and Gayla Gabrielse, Jim Gabrielse (deceased) and Sue and Lee Glomski, Randy and Barb Gabrielse. John's family will greet relatives and friends at First Byron Christian Reformed Church, 8541 Byron Center Ave. SW, on Thursday, November 17, from 4:00 - 5:45 PM. A memorial service will follow at 6:00 PM, with Rev. Ron Noorman officiating. The service will be live-streamed at https://firstbyroncrc.org/ (choose "watch live"). Following the service, guests are invited to remain at church for supper and a time of fellowship. Interment will be in Winchester Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Byron Center Christian Schools or South Christian High School. |
