Elwin Riemersma, age 84, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2024, at Grand Village Assisted Living Center in Grandville, Michigan. Elwin will be remembered for his kind heart, unwavering dedication to his family, and steadfast work ethic. Born to Richard and Dorothy (Smith) Riemersma, Elwin grew up in Jenison, Michigan, one of ten siblings on the family farm where a strong work ethic was instilled in him. He worked for over 30 years at McInerney Spring & Wire Co., where he was highly regarded for his loyalty and diligence. In the early years of their marriage, Elwin often worked 2 or 3 jobs to take care of his family, allowing Kathleen to be a full time mother and wife. By example,  he passed on his mechanical knowledge and common sense to his sons, who have all have become capable, respected men because of him. In his personal life, Elwin found great joy in spending time with his loved ones and creating lasting memories with family.

Elwin married the love of his life, Kathleen (Bieber), and together they shared 62 wonderful years of marriage, building a life centered on love, family, and faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Dorothy (Smith), and 8 of his siblings. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathleen; his children, Timothy (Deborah) Riemersma, Michael (Susan) Riemersma, Mark (Karen) Riemersma, and Amy Chambers; his brother, Jerry Riemersma; his 8 grandchildren, and 16 great- grandchildren. His family was the center of his life, and his legacy of love and devotion will live on through them.

The family will greet visitors on Saturday, November 23, 2024 from 1:30 to 4 pm at the Stroo Funeral Home, 1095 68th Street, SE; Grand Rapids, MI; where a vigil service will begin at 1 pm.  A celebration of Elwin’s life will take place at after the visitation at the home of Tim Riemersma. Contributions in memory of Elwin may be made to St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Grand Village Assisted Living Center and CorsoCare Hospice for their compassionate care and support, as well as the staff at Story Point Wyoming where he and his beloved Kathleen have lived for the past year.  Elwin’s memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Elwin and his family were more like family to me and my family. They were so supportive of the Kelloggsville Wrestling Family. Kathy and Elwin were at every wrestling that Tim, Mike, and Mark participated in. I loved them and always felt loved by them. All of the other wrestling schools knew who the Riemersma boys were and respected their good sportsmanship. Elwin and Kathy wouldn’t let the boys be any other
way.
