Sue Irene Drenth, a special child of God, left this vale of tears November 23, 2024 at the age of 84. Sue was born to Carl and Ruth McBride in Charlevoix, Michigan and grew up there with her brothers and sisters Betty (McBride) Norton, Doris (McBride) Pearl, Carl Eugene McBride, and Larry McBride.  Sue’s parents, Betty, Doris, and Larry, as well as her older brother Johnny who died before her birth, have all passed on ahead of her.  She is survived by her brother Carl Eugene McBride.  Sue graduated from Charlevoix High School, attended Calvin College for nursing, and then graduated from Blodgett Hospital School of Nursing.  Later in life, Sue completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing through the University of Michigan. Sue married Don Drenth in 1961.  They spent their early married life from 1961 - 1965 living and working in Ontario, California where they made many lifelong friends. Sue worked as a nurse at Pomona Valley Community Hospital.  In 1965, they moved back to Grand Rapids, Michigan to be closer to family and have remained there since that time.  Sue worked in Grand Rapids at Blodgett Hospital as a pediatrics nurse, a head nurse, a nurse educator, and a scheduler until 2002.  She was a loving mother to Diane (Drenth) Faulstick, Michael Drenth, and Lisa (Drenth) Hoatlin and then a welcoming mother-in-law to Luke Faulstick, Marian (Frazzini) Drenth and Kevin Hoatlin. She also loved and cherished her grandchildren – Casey and Kaitlin (Faulstick) Williams, Hannah Faulstick, Rebekah Faulstick, Jonathan Faulstick, Steven Drenth, Allison Drenth, Katrina Drenth, Kaela Hoatlin, Kaiden Hoatlin – and her great grandchildren – Ryley Williams-Gotts and Cypress Williams. Sue especially loved young children and was drawn to pediatrics where she cared for many children and families. This loving nature extended to her own family where she spent many days interacting with her grandchildren and helping her children.  She spent her spare moments nurturing her flowers into a beautiful, vibrant garden and sharing this joy with her children, grandchildren, and neighbors. She also loved to bake pies and cinnamon rolls for her family and friends, knit and crochet for her family, and, in recent winters, walk the beaches of Florida searching for sea glass.  Sue was not only a nurturing and caring woman, but also a fierce warrior after her diagnosis of breast cancer in 2019.  With the strength she found in her Lord, she fought valiantly to extend her time with her family here on earth.  She has now joined her grandson Jonathan and all her family members who have passed before her. Her caring touch and palpable love will be greatly missed by the whole family.  We praise the Lord for blessing us with her, mourn losing her, and are joyful knowing that she is now with her Lord and Savior in heaven. A celebration of Sue’s life will be held on Saturday, December 7th at 11:00 am at Covenant Christian Reformed Church, 7171 Willard Ave SE, Grand Rapids, Michigan. The family will greet visitors Friday evening, December 6th, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Covenant Christian Reformed Church. In addition, the family will also greet visitors Saturday morning, December 7th, from 9:30 - 10:30 am prior to the 11:00 am service at Covenant Christian Reformed Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Grand Rapids South Christian High School, the Drenth Family Scholarship Foundation, or Covenant Christian Reformed Church’s Hand to Hand Ministry.

Sue and I had some fun conversations when she did her "walk about" in Crystal Springs. No matter how she was hurting, she always had such a good outlook towards life. I miss her.

Sue was our very special neighbor at Nettles Island. We enjoyed many of delicious her pies over the years. We were always amazed and impressed by the number of sea glass pieces she gathered during her walks on the beach! Nettles will not be the same without her. You will be missed by many. Fondly, Nancy and Dave Burke
