Cynthia "Cindy" Lewis, age 75, passed away at the Commonwealth Senior Living Center at Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, after a long illness. Born in Flint, Michigan, to Cy and Ronnie (Barton) Lewis, she graduated from Flint Northern High School and later earned her bachelor’s degree from Northwood Institute in Midland, Michigan. Growing up, Cindy experienced much of the United States while camping with her family. She often returned to the island in northern Ontario, which served as her father’s fishing and hunting camp. She was a rambunctious teenager and was sent by her parents to Teton Valley Ranch Camp in Kelly, Wyoming, to learn to shoot, hike, and ride horses. She accomplished the first three but was still rambunctious when she returned. Cindy was a synchronized swimmer and active in the choirs at the First Presbyterian Church of Flint and Young Life. Throughout her impressive career with General Motors, Cindy lived in various locations across the United States, including Detroit, Arkansas, Phoenix, Tucson, Boston, and Denver. Her contributions to the industry and dedication to her work will be remembered by all who knew her. However, Cindy will be remembered most for her beauty, originality, loyalty to friends, and irrepressible sense of humor. One friend described her as “Strong-willed, independent, and opinionated to the end.” Another said, “Cindy was a firecracker, ornery to the core, but loved and now missed by all.” Cindy was dedicated to animal rescue, and her love for the Biewer breed inspired her to research and study their lineage to strive for the betterment of the breed. She devoted many hours to tracing her family’s history through genealogy to preserve stories for future generations. Beyond her work with animals and researching genealogy, Cindy proudly honored her father’s legacy by supporting Wreaths Across America, ensuring the sacrifices of our nation’s heroes are not forgotten. She is preceded in death by her parents, Cy and Ronnie Lewis, her sister, Lyn Hayes, and her brother, Bart Lewis. She is survived by her sister, Betsy Hesser; brother, Jon Lewis; four nieces, Abigail Smith, Meggan Mangino, Brennan Hesser, and Jordan Peterson; three nephews, Ted Hesser, Ryder Lewis, and Jake Lewis; three great-nephews, Roman Mangino, Joseph Keener, and Niklas Hesser; and two great-nieces, Avery Mangino and Rhyan Smith. As Cindy requested, there will not be a memorial service. Cindy’s ashes will be spread in the family memorial garden of her dear friend, Paulette Moss, in St. Patrice de Beaurivage, Quebec, where Cindy visited and donated a beautiful cobalt blue birdbath in honor of Paulette’s son, Jay. They will also be spread along the Au Sable River next to the Hartwick Pines State Park outside Grayling, Michigan. This area held special memories for the family, as they lived in a cabin built by her parents next to the river after World War II. Memorial contributions may be directed to Wreaths Across America, a non-profit organization that distributes wreaths for placement on veterans’ graves in military cemeteries, or your local animal rescue organization. |
