Eleanor (97) passed away July 15, 2025, peacefully in her sleep. She was preceded in death by her parents Anna and James Haigerty. Husband William A. Pappas, Brother Father Leo Haigerty, Grandson Ari Pappas, Grandson in law Jonathon Crider. She is survived by John (Cynthia Marion) Pappas, Joe (Heather) Pappas, Bill (Michelle) Pappas. Grandchildren Ellen Crider, Nancy Pappas, Nick Pappas, Kyle (Katie) Pappas, Angelo (Jessica) Pappas, Billy (Cat) Pappas, Drew (Ashleigh) Pappas, Nolan Jaffe, and Cameron Jaffe. Mary Eleanor Pappas (Eleanor), a nurse who dedicated 42 years to St. Vincent Hospital after graduating in 1945, is remembered for her unwavering kindness and faith, which were evident even in difficult times through her ever-present smile. She married William A. Pappas in 1947 and lived in Indianapolis her entire adult life. Born in Loogootee, IN having wonderful loving parents Anna and James Haigerty. She was raised Catholic and carried that as her rock throughout her life. It didn’t hurt that her brother Leo became a Catholic Priest and eventually became the head pastor at St. Thomas Aquinas at Purdue University. Eleanor and Bill eventually had three boys John, Joe, and Bill. She was incredible by the fact of juggling her work and raising these boys. It wasn’t easy. Eleanor leaves behind a legacy of compassion and perseverance, cherished by those who knew her. Her three sons, John, Joe, and Bill, each carry forward her gentle spirit and dedication to family. She was a steadfast friend, a nurturing mother, and a beloved grandmother whose laughter filled many homes and hearts. Eleanor’s faith remained her guiding star, inspiring all with her humility and capacity for forgiveness. Eleanor’s life was marked not only by service but by deep and enduring love. She never missed a birthday, always had a kind word to offer, and believed in the power of small acts to transform lives. Her absence is keenly felt, yet her memory continues to uplift, reminding all who mourn her passing that a life lived with kindness is a life well spent. Visitation will be held Monday July 21 at St. Lukes Catholic Church 7575 East Holliday Drive, Indianapolis, IN at 10:30 am with 11:30 catholic mass following.
